PINETOP Perkins, one of the last old-school bluesmen who played with Muddy Waters and became the oldest Grammy winner this year, has died at his home of cardiac arrest. He was 97.
Perkins was having chest pains when he went to take a nap and paramedics could not revive him, said Hugh Southard, Perkins’ agent for the last 15 years.
The piano man played with an aggressive style and sang with a distinctive gravelly voice.
He accompanied Sonny Boy Williamson on the popular King Biscuit Time radio show broadcast on KFFA in Helena, Arkansas, in the 1940s.

NEW YORK (AP) — Is this the curse of the Spider-Woman?
T.V. Carpio, who stepped in to replace another actress injured in Broadway’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” has now herself been sidelined after an accident on stage.
Producers of the $65 million musical said Tuesday that Carpio was hurt March 16 during a battle scene with an actor. Details on her injury were not immediately available.
Carpio plays an evil spider woman called Arachne, one of the handful of large roles in the complicated, stunt-heavy production.

Hoping to clear up confusion about the band’s status, Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump says they have not split up for good.

“Fall Out Boy never broke up. That never happened,” he tells the radio program “The Gunz Show.” “We really need a sarcasm font on the Internet. We never had that conversation. A lot of kids would come up to me and say, ‘It really sucks you guys broke up.’ I’m like, ‘Man, unless you know something I don’t …’ We just went on [a] break, you know, whatever.

COMING HOME: The Waifs will be back in Australia and performing in Nambour on March 2.Photo: contributed
THE Waifs return to the Coast tomorrow to mark the release of their sixth studio album, Temptation.
The band members have, through their various personal journeys, all ended up living in the US.
So what was once a regular addition to the Aussie Waifs fans calendar, has now become a rare treat.
Celebrating their 19th year together, it is no wonder The Waifs have a string of successes behind them.
The band has multiple ARIA Awards, two live albums, countless festival appearances and have sold over half a million albums.
Vikki Thorn, singer-songwriter, said although she missed Australia she thoroughly enjoyed being a foreigner.
“It’s great being out of your comfort zone,” she said.
“It is a challenge, but it is good for my music.”
In recent years a touring career has played second fiddle to motherhood, relationships and studies.
However music has always remained essential, ongoing and entwined in Vikki’s daily life.
As a result, The Waifs’ new album presents a rich tapestry of melancholy parental laments, gospel pleas, “sweet as summer” love ditties and odes to addiction and marriage.
Temptation is glazed with unmistakable harmonies, driven by all things stringed.
It resembles the band’s earlier style – stripped back – raw and real.
“The great thing about recording so much is you know what works for you,” she said.
“We recorded mostly live – it captures our essence.”
Vikki said she used to be a bit blasé about how her music impacted on people.
But now the songstress sees what an amazing gift she has and how she helps people she has never met, through her music.
“It is amazing people can connect with something so personal as a song I have written,” she said.
The Waifs will be joined by Mama Kin on the East Coast leg of the tour.
The Waifs will play the Nambour Civic Centre on March 2.
