New Music: Surrender to the Sweetness and Spells of Slowdance
Written by Leah Gillies on July 10, 2011 – 5:55 pm
Slowdance, a brand-new indie-pop band out of Brooklyn, sounds a lot like the love child of Karen O (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) – if Karen O and Florence Welch had spent a steamy night in Paris together. Lead vocalist Quay Quinn-Settle (who fancies onsies and bags with recognizable animal parts) considers herself both a Brooklynite and a Francophile, which shines through in Slowdance’s first two tracks, Sweetness and Spell.
Sweetness has a charming, new wavey feel that reminds me of what might be playing in the background of a trendy french coffee shop on a summer afternoon.

Spell, on the other hand, divulges a denser sound and showcases their Brooklyn-synthpop influence.

And still the recently released Slashed Tires lets on to a punchy, angsty side of the band, proving that there could be many unexpected things to come from Slowdance.

I must admit I am curious about their apparent obsession with the letter s, and needless to say I will be checking out their upcoming shows in NYC.
