‘Weird Al’ debuts new Lady Gaga video
Written by Leah Gillies on June 19, 2011 – 8:17 pmLOS ANGELES – “Weird Al” Yankovic is back and he’s weirder than ever in his last music video. The king of pop parodies skews Lady Gaga in Perform This Way, a parody of Born This Way.
Yankovic’s is face digitally imprinted onto the body of a Gaga look-a-like who wears 25 different outfits throughout the video. Many of the costumes are “Weird” takes on actual costumes Lady Gaga has worn including bubbles, raw meat, a peacock, gold lamet and police tape.
The idea of the video was in doubt in April when Yankovic posted the song to YouTube. At the time “Weird Al” thought he was denied permission by Gaga to use a parody of Born This Way on his new album.
The Supreme Court has ruled parodies can be made without permission, but Yankovic always asks an artist for their blessing before releasing his version on an album.
It turns out because of a misunderstanding, Gaga’s manager never forwarded “Weird” Al’s parody to the pop superstar. Once Gaga learned through social networks about the permission problem, Yankovic says singer’s manager apologized to him, told him permission was granted, and that Gaga loves Perform This Way.
Once Yankovic got permission, final work on his ALpocalypse album, which hits store shelves on Tuesday, could begin.
All proceeds from the video and song will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization that Lady Gaga strongly supports.
