New Music: Surrender to the Sweetness and Spells of Slowdance

Slowdance, a brand-new indie-pop band out of Brooklyn, sounds a lot like the love child of Karen O (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) – if Karen O and Florence Welch had spent a steamy night in Paris together. Lead vocalist Quay Quinn-Settle (who fancies onsies and bags with recognizable animal parts) considers herself both a Brooklynite and a Francophile, which shines through in Slowdance’s first two tracks, Sweetness and Spell.

Sweetness has a charming, new wavey feel that reminds me of what might be playing in the background of a trendy french coffee shop on a summer afternoon.

Chickenfoot Reveal Details of ‘Chickenfoot III’

Chickenfoot, the rock supergroup featuring guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former Van Halen members Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar, have finished work on a new album. Though its only their second record together, the band have named the album Chickenfoot III. According to frontman Hagar, they went with the title because “its so good, the songs are so tight, its like we jumped right past having to make a second record.”

The 10-track disc will hit stores on September 27th, heralded by the release of its lead single “Bigfoot” on August 2nd.

Joey wins Splendour holiday

APN online Splendour in the Grass competition winner Joey McKenzie can sit back and enjoy three days of live music without having to sling drinks.

The 21-year-old from the Brisbane suburb of Balmoral worked behind the bar at last year’s festival.

“I worked behind the bar up at the main stage, so I basically got paid to see all of the best bands on the main stage,” she said.

“Florence and The Machine were so amazing. I worked a day shift that day, so I got to go down right to the front and see them.

Liza Minnelli ascends to France’s Legion of Honour

PARIS — France made U.S. actress Liza Minnelli, the singing legend with the powerful vibrato and jet-black pixie hairdo, an officer in its Legion of Honour.

Calling it a “dream come true,” the 65-year-old daughter of Judy Garland whose signature song is “New York, New York” was awarded the red-ribboned medal during a ceremony in Paris.

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand cited not only Minnelli’s extensive career on the stage, but her work in fighting AIDS.
